U.S., Big Tech Launch Chinese Style Coronavirus Tracking & Surveillance

By Carole Hornsby Haynes, Ph.D. April 9, 2020

In a recent commentary Dr. Victor Hanson noted, “We’re Becoming More Like China Than China Is Like Us.” Citizen tracking and surveillance technologies being put in place by the US. government agencies would certainly make Rip Van Winkle think he had awakened in the communist nation instead of a free America.

Several giant tech companies are engaged in public private partnerships with the U.S. government to provide data collection and analysis in the efforts to stop the coronavirus. The Seattle Times reports,

“The U.S. government is in active talks with Facebook, Google and a wide array of tech companies and health experts about how they can use location data gleaned from Americans’ phones to combat the novel coronavirus, including tracking whether people are keeping one another at safe distances to stem the outbreak.”

Google’s parent company Alphabet, in collaboration with the U.S. health department, has launched an online portal for COVID-19 testing. Google issued a public statement that the company was in “early stages” on “a tool to help triage individuals for Covid-19 testing.”

Application for a test requires giving a tech company your personal travel history, health status, and information about contact with people known to be infected with COVID. A Google account and cell phone number are required so your health data can be merged and you will be tracked through your cell phone.

This tracking system is alarmingly similar to one already in use in China where people are required to enroll in a health condition registry.

“In hundreds of cities in China, the government is requiring citizens to use software on their phones that automatically classifies each person with a color code — red, yellow or green — indicating contagion risk. The software determines which people should be quarantined or permitted to enter public places like subways. But officials have not explained how the system makes such decisions, and citizens have felt powerless to challenge it.

In Singapore, the Ministry of Health has posted information online about each coronavirus patient, often in stunning detail, including relationships to other patients. The idea is to warn individuals who may have crossed paths with them, as well as alert the public to potentially infected locations.”

A New York Times analysis of the Chinese software’s code detected that the system not only decides in real time whether a person poses a contagion risk, but shares information with the police. This will most certainly become a permanent form of automated social control.

China Xinhua News @XHNews tweets that 5G robots are gliding through many train stations and airports, checking for those who have a temperature above 37.3 degrees Celsius. Chinese state police are forcibly dragging people out of their cars, putting them into handcuffs and taking them to hospitals that amount to prisons.

Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration, is creating a “free” real time national database of the nation’s coronavirus cases to monitor treatment effectiveness. Doctors will register their COVID-19 cases and medication on the Oracle-built website.

Peter Thiel-backed Palantir, with the CDC and Amazon Web services, is providing a new web app that gathers anonymous data from U.S. hospitals and healthcare agencies, including lab test results, emergency department statuses, bed capacity and ventilator supply. The company is developing predictive models for determining where resources are required. Although personally identifiable data is not being used at this point, critics fear it could in the future.

Bill Gates is using his money and influence to get a national tracking system similar to that of South Korea implemented in the U.S. The system must provide public identification of those who test positive for infectious disease to plan for social distancing of those individuals.

Gates claims, “Eventually we will have some digital certificates to show who have recovered or been tested recently or when we have a vaccine who has received it.” Will the digital certificate be embedded in the human body or applied as a tattoo akin to a cattle brand? There is great concern that this is the Biblical “mark of the beast.” It also brings haunting memories of Jews who were branded by the Nazis.

Under the radar, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has funded the development of a method to embed a person’s vaccination record into the skin using an invisible dye. This method also allows vaccinations to be easily given without medical professionals by using micro needles embedded in a Band-Aid-like device that is placed on the skin.

It is well known that Gates wants population control – and even population reduction – as well as mandatory worldwide vaccination so ease of administering is crucial for his plan.  Is America destined to repeat the horrors of medical experiments conducted under Nazi Germany without consent during WWII and condemned at the Nuremberg Trials?

Vaccine Impact warns,

“Since this technology will allow anyone to embed medical information directly into a person’s skin that can be simply read with a cell phone and an app, privacy issues are certainly legitimate concerns, and the developers of this technology even acknowledge this.”

Newspunch also warns,

“The only catch is that you won’t know exactly what is being put into your digital certificate. You also won’t know who will have access to the data. If history repeats, it will go from being technology adopted for its ‘convenience and safety’ and then overnight will become mandatory for you and your family – or else.”

Russ Green notes in Medium,

"Three trends in health and fitness are converging in health and fitness are converging, leading to an Orwellian future that few may anticipate:  1) The medicalization of daily life (food, movement, sleep, etc.), 3) Government control of health care and its data."

This medical bracelet is a stark reminder of the Galvanic Response Skin bracelet that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation partially funded for American school teachers and students to wear to gauge their physiological reactions during classes.

There is a clear partnership between government agencies and global corporations who understand that people will submit to surveillance and control through their fear of infectious disease.

Some ideas, such as using locations from mobile phones to track movements of people, have prompted concerns that increased surveillance will be hard to unwind. Government control of movement and gatherings of people will become more regulated and restricted. Tech giants will have access to our most personal medical data and, based upon their actions, will share that data which can be used to curtail our freedoms and privacy.

Are Americans really willing to give up their freedoms and privacy for the sake of public health?
