What Is Dallas Council Hiding In their Frenzy Over Confederate Monuments?

By Carole Hornsby Haynes, Ph.D. April 22, 2018

Last September the Dallas City Council quickly removed the Robert E. Lee statue, a magnificent bronze equestrian sculpture, and now they want to bulldoze the Confederate War Memorial located in Pioneer Park Cemetery. They plan to erect a lynching memorial, explaining they want to forget the past and bring racial harmony to Dallas. Yet they provide fake details about the lynching.

The Dallas Morning News reported in 1910 that a two-and-a-half-year-old girl, missing for four hours, was found in a barn loft alone with Allen Brooks, a 65-year-old black man who worked for the child’s father. Both were taken to a doctor who examined them, after which Brooks was charged with attempted rape and jailed. A few days later an angry mob burst into the Dallas County Courthouse (now the Old Red Courthouse) while his trial was in progress and, dragging Brooks outside, hung him. A judge subsequently declared Brooks guilty after examining the evidence. However, the council states that Brooks was never convicted.

Neo-Marxist Mayor Mike Rawlings has been a strong advocate for removing Confederate monuments, expressing concern their presence in Dallas will lead to violence like that spearheaded by white supremacists over the Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville, Virginia. Rawlings called the Dallas monuments “dangerous totems” and “monuments of propaganda.”

Democrat Mayor Rawlings neglected to mention that the Robert E. Lee statue was dedicated to the city in 1936 by Democrat President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Are Democrats destroying historical monuments because they want to erase all evidence that they have been the party of slavery and racial segregation and are to blame for the perpetuation of government dependency and poverty among blacks?

Democrats are quite careful never to mention that Southern slave owners were Democrats or that the Democrat party perpetuated racial segregation after the Civil War through Jim Crow laws, founded the Ku Klux Klan, established poll taxes, and opposed the civil rights legislation of the 1960s. They prefer the ignorant public believe this was at the hands of the Republican party, which totally opposed slavery and supported civil rights legislation.

Mayor Rawlings and the Dallas Council members profess their desire to rid the city of visual reminders of the Civil War that supposedly make people feel unequal. How do monuments to war veterans – American war veterans – do that? The monuments have stood in Dallas for many decades without anyone complaining about racism or inequality yet Rawlings thinks they are “scary” and Kingston thinks “frightening.”

If they want to banish all memories of Southern slavery, slave owners, and veterans of the Civil War, then several council members should be removed from office ecause they too are reminders of slavery and the Southern Confederacy. Ancestors of Mayor Rawlings, James McGough, and Philip Kingston owned slaves and fought in the Civil War. Mark Clayton’s ancestors fought in the war.

Rawlings’ ancestor (Moses Green) owned 19 slaves in 1830 and 13 in 1840, McGough’s ancestor (Robert McGough) owned five in 1830 and 10 in 1840, and two of Kingston’s forebears owned slaves – eight for one and 2 for the other. Maybe their white guilt will be now be absolved.

The fact is that these council members, ignoring the wishes of a large majority of Dallas citizens who want historical artifact to remain, caved to the demands of Antifa, an anti-government, anti-capitalist left wing group in destroying the history of Texas.

Dallas could be a great city but cronyism, corruption, and moral illegitimacy are deeply embedded in city hall politics. It is the most indebted city in Texas with very little to show for the billions of dollars spent.

One thing for certain is that racism and racial hatred are alive and well, thanks to Dallas city leaders.
